## How we cite evidence

Every medical-style claim on this site should point to a source. When we mention **sensitivity** or **specificity**, we name the **study**, **population**, **cutoff**, and limits. We do **not** claim “this test is 95% accurate” without that context.

## Primary MSI-BPD publication

1. **Zanarini, M. C., Vujanovic, A. A., Parachini, E. A., Boulanger, J. L., Frankenburg, F. R., & Hennen, J. (2003).** A screening measure for BPD: the McLean Screening Instrument for Borderline Personality Disorder (MSI-BPD). *Journal of Personality Disorders*, 17(6), 568–573.
   - PubMed: [PMID 14560840](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/14560840/)
   - Role on this site: instrument description, scoring (0–10), and the commonly cited screening cutoff of **7+** in that validation work.

### Validation context (original study)

Details that matter when you read accuracy numbers:

- **Instrument:** 10-item yes/no MSI-BPD
- **Cutoff discussed in that work:** 7 or higher
- **Comparison:** structured clinical interview for BPD (not another online quiz)
- **Reported performance (that study):** sensitivity about **0.81**, specificity about **0.85** against the interview used in the paper
- **Population:** adults with treatment histories in the validation sample (not a random internet sample)

Later studies in other languages, ages, or settings may find different optimal cutoffs. That is expected for screening tools.

## Related clinical literature themes

These topics appear often when clinicians interpret BPD-related screens. They are starting points for further reading, not a complete bibliography:

- Differential diagnosis with bipolar disorder, PTSD, ADHD, depression, and anxiety
- Role of structured interviews versus brief screens
- Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and other evidence-based treatments as clinical pathways—not quiz outcomes

## How this site uses sources

- Homepage scoring copy cites Zanarini et al. for the **7+** screening threshold context.
- Articles on [accuracy](/articles/is-msi-bpd-accurate/) and [score meaning](/articles/what-does-msi-bpd-score-mean/) repeat study limits.
- Differentials explain **overlap**, not “if you have X, you have BPD.”
