## Quick answer

The **McLean Screening Instrument for Borderline Personality Disorder (MSI-BPD)** is a short **yes/no** questionnaire. It helps adults and clinicians notice patterns linked to BPD in research. It is a **screening instrument**, not a diagnostic interview.

## Why it exists

Full BPD assessment takes time. Clinicians and researchers often need a **brief first step** that is easy to score. The MSI-BPD was built for that role: flag people who may benefit from a longer evaluation.

## Who developed it

Mary C. Zanarini and colleagues at McLean Hospital developed the MSI-BPD. The main validation study was published in the *Journal of Personality Disorders* in 2003. You can read the PubMed record here: [PMID 14560840](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/14560840/).

## What the 10 questions cover

Items ask about experiences across adolescence and adulthood. Themes include:

- Unstable or intense relationships
- Fear of abandonment
- Mood swings and intense anger (see [BPD emotional dysregulation](/articles/bpd-emotional-dysregulation/))
- Identity confusion or emptiness
- Dissociation
- Self-harm or suicide attempts

This site groups answers into four learning themes (interpersonal, affective, identity, impulsivity). Those theme totals are for reflection. They are **not** a separate official scale.

## How screening differs from diagnosis

| Screening (MSI-BPD) | Diagnosis |
| --- | --- |
| Short self-report | Clinical interview and history |
| Flags patterns | Weighs duration, impairment, and differential conditions |
| Can be done privately online | Requires a licensed clinician |

A **positive screen** means “look closer.” It does **not** mean “you have BPD.”
